Ted Hill MBE is signing copies of his historical novel Timber & Tides at the Mary Rose Museum on Tuesday 11 August, from 2:30pm to 4:00pm. It's a fitting spot for the book, as the story is built around the very ship the museum is named after.
Hill, a Hamble author, wrote Timber & Tides as a historical novel for teenagers and anyone with a fascination for Tudor history. Rather than telling the story through the lives of kings and admirals, he follows Tom Harcourt, a young Portsmouth lad whose life becomes inseparably linked with the Mary Rose, Henry VIII's flagship, as he grows from an eager boy into a skilled sailor. It's a richly researched, fast-paced read that mixes adventure, friendship and naval battles with the authentic details of Tudor life.
This is the first title in Hill's Heroes of the Deep series, and it's available as an e-book, paperback and hardcover. He launched the book in January, choosing that month because it's when construction of the Mary Rose began in Portsmouth back in 1510. The ship itself sank in the Solent in 1545, was raised in October 1982, and now rests in Portsmouth's Historic Dockyard, so there's a nice bit of local history to the whole thing.
