The Phoenix Players bring The Wind in the Willows to Trinity Church Theatre on Thursday 13 August. It's a stage adaptation of Kenneth Grahame's classic, and the production focuses on friendship, loyalty and the importance of home.
The story works by playing two worlds against each other. On one side, there's the peaceful, civilised life of the river and the home; on the other, the dangerous, unpredictable Wild Wood and the human world. In the middle is Toad, the impulsive and arrogant one of the lot, and the show follows his redemption as he learns how to be a better friend. It's a story about growing up, in a way, even if the characters happen to be animals.
For the script, the production uses an adaptation by the award-winning playwright Mike Kenny. He's known for a light touch and a playful theatricality, and the idea here is to combine the joy and mystery of Grahame's original novel with that same lightness on stage. It's a classic tale, but Kenny's version keeps it from feeling too stiff or old-fashioned.
