A soul revue fronted by William Hicks that recreates the style of Barry White, performed with the live band Soul Unlimited and the Motown Supreme Dreamgirls.
The Legend of Barry White comes to the Kings Theatre on Sunday 13 September, a tribute revue brought over from the USA. It's fronted by vocalist William Hicks, who's known as 'the big man with the big voice' and who recreates the style and silky-smooth bass-baritone of the three-time Grammy Award winner. Barry White's catalogue sold 100 million records, including 20 gold and 10 platinum singles, so there's plenty of material to draw from.
Hicks hails from Atlanta, Georgia, and performs with the live band Soul Unlimited, with the Motown Supreme Dreamgirls supporting him on stage. The set runs through the hits, including 'You're the First, the Last, My Everything', 'Can't Get Enough of Your Love, Babe', 'You See the Trouble with Me', 'Never, Never Gonna Give You Up', 'Just the Way You Are', 'What Am I Gonna Do With You' and 'Let the Music Play'.
The show runs about two hours and ten minutes, with the full band and backing singers on stage throughout. It's a night built around that particular bass-baritone sound and the soul arrangements that made White a household name, rather than a small selection of songs. The Kings Theatre is one of Portsmouth's theatres, and like the others in the city, it's an attraction in its own right, with history and architecture that draw audiences in before a performer even takes the stage.
