Danish/Brazilian Wall of Sound duo The Courettes live, with special guests Quick Romance.
The Courettes play The Wedgewood Rooms on Saturday 12 September, with Quick Romance opening the night. The Courettes are the live duo of married couple Martin and Flavia Couri, who live in Denmark and share the stage as drums and vocals alongside vocals and guitar. They play only original songs, and the set will draw from their recent output.
Their sound is a mix of 1960s girl groups and Phil Spector's Wall of Sound, with garage rock, R&B, surf music and doo-wop worked in. They're often described as 'The Ronettes meet The Ramones at Gold Star Studios', and that gives you a fair idea of where they sit — old-school pop and rock and roll with a garage edge. They signed to the British label Damaged Goods in 2020 and released Back in Mono in autumn 2021, which picked up top reviews from Mojo, Classic Rock and Shindig.
Their 2024 album, The Soul of the Fabulous Courettes, has taken them across 20 countries, from Little Steven's Underground Garage cruise out of Miami to opening The Damned's 50th-anniversary show at Wembley Arena, where they played to around 6,000 people and were later invited onto the band's full US tour. They've also put out the single 'Killer Kiss'.
