Recomposed by Max Richter: Vivaldi, The Four Seasons

Mystery Ensemble are bringing Recomposed by Max Richter: Vivaldi, The Four Seasons to Portsmouth Cathedral on Friday 25 September. It's a reimagining of Antonio Vivaldi's The Four Seasons, one of the most famous and frequently performed works of classical music, seen through the lens of contemporary composer Max Richter.

Richter took Vivaldi's original cycle and worked it over in the spirit of minimalism and postmodernism, looping and shifting the familiar melodies until they feel new. It's become one of his most well-known pieces: after its 2012 release, it topped the iTunes Classical Music charts in more than 20 countries. If you know the original Four Seasons well, you'll recognise the shapes of the seasons as they emerge, but they're stretched and re-ordered in a way that sits somewhere between the Baroque and the modern.

Richter himself is a big name in film and dance. He's written music for dozens of feature films and documentaries and was voted best film composer by the European Film Academy in 2008. You'll recognise his work from Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island, David Mackenzie's Last Love on Earth, and Waltz with Bashir. Beyond the screen, he's recorded 12 solo albums and played the London Barbican, the Paris Philharmonic, the Sydney Opera House, and the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. His stage projects include the Sum opera and the Infra ballet, choreographed by Wayne McGregor at Covent Garden.

On the night, the Mystery Ensemble will be the ones performing it. The concert runs on 25 September at Portsmouth Cathedral, with the performance continuing into 26 September.
