A 16-mile charity walk around Portsea Island in memory of Evie Dove, for The Evie Dove Foundation.
The Portsmouth Big Coastal Walk returns to the Red Lion, Cosham on Saturday 5 September, starting and finishing at the same spot. It's a 16-mile loop around Portsea Island, and it's open to everyone. Entry is £10, which gets you a bright pink The Evie Dove Foundation t-shirt and a medal to take home.
The walk raises money for The Evie Dove Foundation, set up in memory of Evie Dove, who died of a brain tumour in 2022 when she was 13. The foundation funds training for children's healthcare professionals working in the NHS, who they call 'Evie Dove Heroes'. So far, they've supported more than 290 paediatric professionals. The Portsmouth leg of the walk was inspired by local resident Sarah Smart, 55, who was diagnosed with a non-cancerous brain tumour in August 2021 and took part in the foundation's Big Coastal Walk in Kent back in 2024. This is the second year she's organised the Portsmouth edition.
It's not a race, and there are no fundraising targets to hit, so you can just turn up and walk. Trustee Matthew Paxton puts it simply: 'It's not a race, it's about supporting each other.' Whether you're a regular walker or this is your first time out, the focus is on the community and the cause rather than the clock.
