Outdoor Cinema Screening: Quadrophenia (1979)

Staggeringly Good Brewery is hosting an outdoor screening of Quadrophenia (1979) on Friday 7 August, with the film presented by Southsea Cinema & Arts Centre. It's an open-air showing, set up in the Jurassic car park on Rodney Road, PO4 8SS, so you'll be watching it outside rather than inside the brewery itself.

Quadrophenia is a British cult classic based on The Who's rock opera of the same name. It's set in 1965 across London and Brighton, and follows Jimmy Cooper, a disillusioned working-class teenager who escapes the drudgery of his postal job to become a Mod: sharp suits, scooters, music, and a fierce rivalry with the Rockers. Jimmy looks up to the Mod leader Ace Face, and when the two factions clash in Brighton, the fallout brings both trouble and a chance encounter with the lovely Steph. Back in London, his search for identity and belonging only leaves him more adrift. It's a film that captures that specific mid-sixties Mod subculture — the clothes, the scooters, and the restlessness — and it's a good one to see on a big screen.

There are a few practical things to keep in mind before you head down. The screening is for over-18s only, so it's an adults-only night. The brewery bar stays open throughout, but outside drinks aren't permitted, so you'll need to get yours from the bar. And because it's an outdoor session, it may be postponed if the weather turns, so it's worth keeping an eye on the forecast before you set off.
