Luminarium comes to Victoria Park from Friday 11 September to Sunday 13 September, a large-scale immersive installation by Architects of Air. It's a walk-through experience rather than something you just stand and watch: you go inside a glowing, ever-changing environment of light structures, shifting colours and soft, atmospheric spaces, and it's designed for all ages, so it works as well with kids as it does on your own.
Beyond the installation itself, there's a programme of community events running alongside it, with workshops and other activity for people to get involved in. It's not just a one-off visit, then; there's a bit more to it if you fancy sticking around.
Luminarium is part of The Point Is Portsmouth, a wider programme bringing contemporary circus, large-scale outdoor performance, immersive installations and community-led activity to the city. That, in turn, sits within Portsmouth100, the celebrations for the city's centenary year. The whole thing draws on Portsmouth's naval and maritime history, its football culture and its tradition of free artistic promenade events, so it's tied into the city's own story rather than just being dropped in.
