A walk and talk exploring the architectural aspects of Langstone Harbour, led by local architect Jeremy Sayer and historian Ann Griffiths.
Heritage Open Days returns to Portsmouth from 11 to 20 September, and one of the standouts this year is the Langstone Architecture walk and talk, which kicks things off on Friday 11 September. It's a guided tour of Langstone harbour, led by local architect Jeremy Sayer of PWP Architects, who'll be talking through the architectural side of this small, mostly Georgian harbour. If you've spent any time around the water, you've probably noticed the character of the place without thinking much about the buildings themselves, so this is a good chance to actually see what's going on there.
There's more to it than just the walk, too. Sayer has put together a display of historical photographs, maps and drawings over in the chapel, which you can look through to get a better sense of how the harbour has changed over time. The chapel itself is a self-guided visit attraction, so you can spend as much time there as you like. On top of that, local historian Ann Griffiths will be leading a tour of the village's key features, so you get the architectural perspective from Sayer and the local history from Griffiths in one go.
It's part of Heritage Open Days, which started in 1994 as a way for people across the country to explore the heritage and history within their own communities. The idea is to get museums, attractions, theatres and historic sites to throw open their doors for a weekend of free activities, talks and displays. More than three decades on, it's grown into a huge celebration of culture with hundreds of events taking place right across the country. This year's theme is 'Everyday Histories', and the Langstone walk fits right into that — looking at the buildings and the layout of a place we usually just pass through.

One thing to keep in mind: this one needs pre-booking. You'll need to go through The Spring Arts and Heritage Centre Box Office, which opened for bookings from 12pm on 1 September. They're open Monday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm, and you can get your tickets online, in person or over the phone. The walk starts from the Ship Inn Car Park on Friday 11 September.
