Free outdoor screening of the 1948 classic 'Oliver Twist' at Portsmouth Cricket Club, part of the Portsmouth100 centenary celebrations.
Portsmouth Cricket Club is hosting a free outdoor screening of Oliver Twist on Friday 17 July, starting at 9pm. It's part of the Sunset Outdoor Cinema 2026 programme, which the Portsmouth Film Society is running in collaboration with Southsea Cinema and Arts Centre. They're bringing a selection of classics and cult favourites to outdoor venues across the city, with the cricket club and Staggeringly Good Brewery among the spots on the bill.
The film on the night is the 1948 version of Oliver Twist, based on the Dickens story. It follows a nine-year-old orphan who, after daring to ask for more gruel, escapes his taskmaster and falls in with the Artful Dodger and his criminal mentor Fagin. From there he ends up in the care of Mr Brownlow, all while evading the villainous Bill Sikes. It's a well-known tale, and seeing it on a big screen outdoors is a different thing from watching it on a telly at home.
The whole thing sits within Portsmouth100, a year-long series of events marking the city's centenary. The outdoor cinema is one of the many things they've got lined up throughout the year to celebrate Portsmouth's history, so this screening is part of a much larger calendar of events across the city.
