Between Land and Tide

Between Land and Tide is a public art project by Olana Light, a Portsmouth-based multidisciplinary artist who works across sculpture, performance and moving image. Her practice looks at the relationship between humans and the natural world, and this project brings that out into the city's public spaces through a series of live performances. The performances feature 'sea-born' female guardians merging with a monumental starfish made from natural and sustainable materials, their bodies shifting between human and sea-like forms. It's built around the sea, tidal ecosystems and Portsmouth's coastal landscape, and it's meant to open up questions about connection, environmental fragility and our relationship with the ocean. The performances are rounded out by workshops, exhibitions and community activities across the city.

The performances are spread across five different public spaces in Portsmouth over the next few weeks. The first is at Victoria Park on Sunday 16 August at 12pm. From there it moves to the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard on Saturday 22 August, with two performances that day, one at 12pm and another at 2pm. On Sunday 6 September it's at Hotwalls Studios at 12pm, and on Sunday 19 September it's at Southsea Beach at 11am. The final one is at Palmerston Road on Sunday 27 September at 12pm.

Behind the performances is a full creative team. The performers are Anna Barzotti, Caroline Broadbent, Maud Dean, Jo Rose, Kate Jones, Olana Light and Ruth Goldwyn. Kate Jones also choreographs the work, and Olana Light provides the sound. The project is supported by public funding from Arts Council England, a National Lottery Project Grant, and Portsmouth City Council, with partners including Art Space Portsmouth, Hotwalls Studios, Fratton Together, City Arts Portsmouth and the Sustainable Conservation Trust.
