Portsmouth Historic Dockyard: ships, museums and practical details

Portsmouth Historic Dockyard is a large maritime museum and heritage site at HM Naval Base Portsmouth, PO1 3LJ, covering around 500 years of naval history. It brings several attractions together, including historic ships, galleries and boat tours, so the experience feels more like exploring a working dockyard than walking through a single museum. The main highlights are HMS Victory, Nelson’s flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar, HMS Warrior, the world’s first iron-hulled, armoured warship, and HMS M.33, the only surviving ship from the Gallipoli campaign. Victory is currently surrounded by scaffolding as part of the long-term “Victory Live: The Big Repair” conservation project, which began in 2022 and is expected to last at least ten years.

The National Museum of the Royal Navy adds galleries such as Hear My Story, the Sailing Gallery, Victory Gallery and Nelson Gallery, with displays covering 350 years of naval history. The site also includes the Mary Rose Museum, showing one-third of Henry VIII’s Tudor warship and around 19,000 artefacts, as well as Boathouse 4, which has family activities and the “Forgotten Craft” exhibition. The atmosphere varies from quiet, detailed museum displays to the more physical experience of climbing through ships, with narrow doors, steep stairs and uneven floors in some areas. Harbour tours and the complimentary Waterbus connect the dockyard with the Royal Navy Submarine Museum and Explosion Museum of Naval Firepower in Gosport, although those attractions are separate parts of the wider visit.

Tickets depend on how much you want to see. A 1 Ship or Museum Day Ticket costs £36 for adults aged 16 and over and £26 for children aged 3–15. The 3 Ships or Museums Annual Ticket costs £46 for adults and £31 for children, while the Ultimate Explorer Ticket, with unlimited access for 12 months, costs £51 for adults, £36 for children, £99 for one adult with up to three children, or £120 for two adults with up to three children. The dockyard is generally open daily from 10:00 to 17:00, with last entry usually at 16:00; check the official site before travelling because attraction times can vary. It closes from 24 to 26 December.

Portsmouth Historic Dockyard is particularly easy to reach by public transport: Portsmouth Harbour station is about 200 yards from the entrance, and buses stop at The Hard Interchange. By car, the official Admiralty Road car park, PO1 3GW, has 295 spaces and is roughly 400 yards from Victory Gate. Accessibility varies by ship. The Mary Rose Museum has accessible routes, HMS Warrior has a ramp and stairlift, and free carer tickets are available, but HMS Victory’s lower decks and the submarine attractions involve tight or steep access. As of September 2026, the Royal Marines Experience is scheduled to open on 24 October 2026.
