The Paulsgrove and Wymering Carnival Tradition

Portsmouth has plenty of summer events, but there is one community tradition in the north of the city that stands out for its local character. The Paulsgrove and Wymering Carnival has been running annually since 1985, making it a long-standing fixture in the area. Organized by the Paulsgrove & Wymering Carnival Association, this non-profit event is currently the only annual carnival hosted in any part of Portsmouth. The organizers secure grants to keep everything free and accessible, even helping local groups with the costs of costumes and workshops so that everyone can participate. Local partners like the 2nd Portsmouth Scouts Group, also known as PAWS, are regular participants, with members looking forward to the procession and the stalls on the green every year.

This year's 41st annual edition took place yesterday, Saturday, 27th June 2026, aligning with the 'Portsmouth100' celebrations that mark the centenary of Portsmouth receiving city status. The day started at 10:00 at Victory Primary School, where walkers, floats, animals, schools, churches, and scout groups gathered. The main procession set off at 10:30, embarking on a two-mile route along Allaway Avenue to Washbrook Road, before heading back via Ludlow Road and finishing at the green space on Hempsted Road, known as Hempsted Green.

While the parade was moving, the hub of activity on Allaway Avenue was already active. From 10:00, the Green hosted table-top sales, community information stands, a small fun fair, and various food concessions. Live music and entertainment on the main stage started at 10:30, showcasing performances by local groups and individuals throughout the day. This setup follows a successful format established over decades, similar to the 2024 carnival which took place on Saturday, 22nd June 2024, and featured a similar mix of community floats, dancing, and children's activities.
