New HMS Victory Viewing Platform Opens in Portsmouth

If you are planning a trip down to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard this summer, there is a completely new way to experience the site. As part of HMS Victory: The Big Repair—a major £42 million conservation initiative underway since 2022—a new viewing platform and visitor route have opened up. The scaffolding structure surrounding Lord Nelson's 260-year-old flagship gives a direct look into the ship's interior spaces and allows you to watch specialist conservators working in real time.

Alongside the new elevated vantage points, the dockyard is featuring a few limited-run displays over the next couple of months. The most notable inclusion is the Trafalgar Sail, which is on display until 30 September 2026. As the largest surviving object from the Battle of Trafalgar, the battle-damaged topsail still bears visible holes and marks from the 1805 conflict. You can find this exhibit integrated into the Victory Summer – the Trafalgar Sail experience over at the Royal Navy Museum.

Inside the Great Cabin of HMS Victory, Nelson's silver dining set is being showcased on select dates. The dining table has been staged to replicate how it would have looked just before dinner was served, giving a sense of daily life aboard the ship. This setup is accessible on Wednesdays until 26 August 2026, running from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Additionally, from Monday 27 July to Friday 31 July 2026, the ship hosts Meet the Makers sessions between 11:00 am and 3:00 pm, where craftspeople demonstrate traditional maritime techniques such as carving, sail-making, gilding, and cordage work.

Over at the Mary Rose Museum, several summer activities are lined up to complement the visit. These include Tudor ribbon and cord weaving demonstrations by an artist in residence on 28 July and 25 August, alongside interactive sessions like Create your own Cowdray on Wednesdays and Fridays from 29 July to 28 August. All these installations and events are included with a standard attraction ticket for the dockyard, though advance booking is recommended due to capacity limits on the viewing platforms.
