Screening of the animated film Wildwood by LAIKA at the Empirical Theater within the Oregon Museum of Science & Industry.
Wildwood, the new stop-motion feature from LAIKA, is screening at OMSI on Friday, October 23. It's playing in the Empirical Theater, which is the museum's dedicated cinema space—the one they bill as the home of "big movies, giant screen" in Portland. The theater runs on Dolby Atmos sound, so it's built for the kind of immersive audio a big animated feature needs.
If you're not familiar with LAIKA, they're the studio behind Coraline, ParaNorman, The Boxtrolls, Kubo and the Two Strings, and Missing Link. They're known for their painstaking stop-motion process, where every frame is a physical set and a hand-posed puppet. Wildwood is their latest, and seeing it on a big screen is the way it was meant to be watched.
The Empirical Theater is part of the broader OMSI experience, which is a rainy-day staple for a lot of us—the kind of place locals remember from school field trips or drizzly weekends. The theater itself is accessible, with a wheelchair-accessible upper-level entrance, CaptiView closed-caption devices, Fidelio RX audio-description units, and volume amplification. There's also the Empirical Café, which serves coffee, beer, and wine in the evenings alongside classic movie treats.

Beyond the cinema, OMSI hosts "OMSI After Dark" on the last Wednesday of every month—a 21+ night with science-themed workshops, drinks, and shows. The museum is located at 1945 SE Water Ave in Portland, and Wildwood runs from 6:30 to 8:15 PM on October 23.
