Concert by the DIY bedroom pop duo Vansire, featuring the musical projects of Josh Augustin and Samuel Winemiller.
Vansire play Polaris Hall on Wednesday, November 11, starting at 8 PM. The duo is the project of Josh Augustin and Samuel Winemiller, two high school friends from Minnesota who started making music together after meeting on their school's drumline. They've kept a DIY approach throughout, recording in basements and bedrooms and self-releasing to a growing online scene of bedroom pop listeners and creators. What began as a summer side-project grew over three years of grassroots hype into a legitimate name with wide-ranging collaborations and several releases.
Their debut album, Reflections and Reveries, came out in 2016, steeped in reverb, shimmery synths and Smiths-era guitar rhythms. By 2019, their third LP, The Modern Western World, marked a shift toward more lyrics-forward songcraft and echoey atmospheres, running 19 tracks long. Augustin handles the ambient synth washes, Dilla-informed percussion and bookish lyricism, while Winemiller provides the sweeping guitar landscapes. Isaac Winemiller rounds them out on easy-going, funk-infused bass. They describe the sound as a reflection of the Midwest's driftless region they call home.
