A screening of the 1932 silent film Vampyr by Carl Theodor Dreyer, accompanied by a live musical score performed by Kraftwitch.
Tomorrow Theater is screening Vampyr (1932) on Friday, October 30, with a live score by Kraftwitch. It's part of the theater's AUDIOLOGY film series, and filmmaker Donal Mosher will introduce the film before it starts. The movie is a silent supernatural piece directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer, shown with English intertitles.
Vampyr follows Allan Gray, a young man drawn to the occult who arrives at a small village and senses a sinister force closing in. While there, he meets an old man who asks him to protect his two daughters, one of whom has been bitten by a vampire. It's a slow-burn, atmospheric kind of horror, and the live score is meant to play along with it in real time.
Kraftwitch is the stage name of John Moletress, a Philadelphia-based multimedia artist, producer, psychotherapist, and DJ. He's the founder of Three Wands Records, and he describes his approach to sound as "embodied," which has led him to score films like Pink Narcissus (1971) and to lead the experimental theater collective Force Collision from 2009 to 2015. That collective earned him a Helen Hayes Award for Emerging Theatre Artist in 2010.
