The Oregon Symphony performs Mark Knopfler's score to The Princess Bride, directed by Rob Reiner, in a cinematic concert staging.
The Oregon Symphony brings The Princess Bride to the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall on Saturday, October 17, and Sunday, October 18. It's a cinematic staging of Rob Reiner's 1987 classic, and the timing is no accident: the film is celebrating its 40th anniversary. The movie plays on the screen while the symphony performs the score live in the hall.
If you know the story, you know the setup. Narrated by Peter Falk, it follows Buttercup and her true love Westley, who is rescued by the mysterious Man in Black. The music was written by Mark Knopfler, and for this production, his original score has been expanded for a full symphony orchestra. Ron Spigelman conducts, and the whole thing is part of the Oregon Symphony's Film Concerts series, sponsored by Bob and Dorothy Haley.
The venue is the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall at 1037 SW Broadway, a former movie palace that's now one of Portland's most elegant stages. It's a fitting place for a film concert, given its history as a cinema. You'll see the movie and hear the music together, with the orchestra playing along in real time.

There are two performances to choose from: Saturday, October 17, at 7:30 PM, and Sunday, October 18, at 2:00 PM. If you're a fan of the movie, it's a good chance to see it on the big screen with a full orchestra filling out the sound.
