Special screening of the Director's Cut of The Little Shop of Horrors with a shadowcast performance by Rogue Apostles.
The Little Shop of Horrors is coming to the Clinton Street Theater on Saturday, October 10, and it's not just a screening. The night features the 1986 Director's Cut of the movie, with Rogue Apostles performing a shadowcast live in front of the screen. If you're not familiar with the format, a shadowcast is exactly what it sounds like: a group of performers on stage acting out the movie in real time, mirroring the dialogue, the songs, and the choreography as they play out on the screen behind them. It turns a movie you've seen a dozen times into something you're watching and listening to in two places at once.
That particular version of the film is worth the distinction. The Director's Cut restores the original ending and the songs that were cut from the theatrical release, so you're getting the full version of the story rather than the edited one most people know. Between the restored footage and Rogue Apostles acting it out live, it's a different experience than just popping the DVD in at home.
If you've never seen Little Shop before, it's the story of a downtrodden florist who finds a strange, singing plant from outer space that feeds on human blood in exchange for fame and fortune. It's a dark comedy with a great soundtrack, and seeing it as a shadowcast adds another layer to the whole thing. The movie runs from 7 PM to 9 PM, so it's a straightforward Saturday night out.
