Screening of Ken Russell's 1971 film 'The Devils' in its director's cut, restored in 4K and projected on 35mm at the Hollywood Theatre.
The Devils is playing at the Hollywood Theatre starting Saturday, October 17, as part of a multi-day run. It's Ken Russell's 1971 film, and the theater is projecting the director's cut from a restored 4K version on 35mm.
The movie is a feverish account of the Loudun possessions witchcraft trial in 17th-century France. Oliver Reed plays the libertine priest Urbain Grandier, and Vanessa Redgrave is Sister Jeanne, whose influence over the convent's nuns leads the abbess to expose the house to the country's witch trials. It's a story of religious hysteria and body horror, and it's famously one of cinema's most transgressive and incendiary provocations.
That reputation comes with a long history of censorship. It was rated X upon release, then banned, censored, and recut in many territories for decades. For a long time, it's only been available in those censored forms, so seeing the director's cut is a rare chance to see the film as Russell intended. The 4K restoration brings it back to life, and the Hollywood is running it on 35mm, which is how it was meant to be seen.
