Concert by the French trio SLIFT with special guest Rhododendron at the Wonder Ballroom.
SLIFT bring their tour to Wonder Ballroom on Wednesday, October 21, with Portland's Rhododendron opening. The French trio is made up of brothers Jean and RƩmi Fossat and drummer Canek Flores, who's been with them since high school in Toulouse.
Their previous albums were sprawling, genre-blending improvisations, but their fourth, Fantasia, is their leanest and most direct record yet: a pointed saga about overcoming international upheaval. Jean Fossat wrote the core of the album drawing on the Argentinian author Jorge Luis Borges, whose fiction he admires, and the band even borrowed the song title "Orbis Tertius" from him. Its eight songs trace an imagined town plagued by xenophobia and uniformity, with hope emerging in the back half.
Opening the night is Rhododendron, a Portland trio formed in 2019. They're known for dense, technical experimental rock that pulls from math rock, post-hardcore, and jazz, fronted by Ezra Chong, Gage Walker, and Noah Mortola.
