Soul and jazz vocalist Shelly Rudolph performs live at Moxy Portland Downtown.
Shelly Rudolph plays Moxy Portland Downtown on Saturday, October 10, starting at 7 PM. She's a Portland-based vocalist, songwriter, and performer whose work blends jazz, soul, and poetic lyricism, and this is a solo bill with her as the main feature.
If you're not familiar with her, the descriptions from the critics give a good sense of the voice. Jazz Times called it "robust and captivating," LA Weekly went with "honey-glazed throat," and All About Jazz described it as "equal parts sugar and whiskey." The Oregonian called her a rising star, writing, "When Shelly Rudolph sings, you can smell the smoke."
She's performed well beyond Portland, taking her music to New York, Los Angeles, the West Indies, Japan, Korea, and Indonesia. Her Swank Soul project leans into bluesy boleros and hip-sway ballads. Her discography includes The Way We Love, recorded with Grammy-winning cellist David Darling, and the dance-soul anthem "I Love LOVE" with Charlie Hunter, which has played across 17 countries. More recently, she premiered Orfea Rising, a five-movement jazz myth suite, on September 5 at the Montavilla Jazz Festival.
