Kung Fu Theater is bringing a rare 35mm print of Seven Brothers Meet Dracula to the Hollywood Theatre on Tuesday, October 13, at 7:30 PM. It's a 1974 kung fu horror classic that comes from a pretty strange place: Hammer Film Productions, the British studio known for Gothic horror, teaming up with the Shaw Brothers, the Hong Kong martial arts masters. The result is exactly what the title suggests—vampires and kung fu sharing the same screen.
Peter Cushing plays a vampire hunter on the trail of the legendary seven golden vampires. As the title hints, they turn out to be just as susceptible to a well-placed punch as they are to a wooden stake. It's a mashup that doesn't happen often, and seeing it on 35mm gives it the kind of texture and scale that a digital stream just can't touch.
To get some context on the Hammer side of things: the studio's Gothic films were at the height of their popularity from the mid-1950s through the 1970s, with Christopher Lee as Dracula among their regulars. Seven Brothers Meet Dracula sits right in that era, when Hammer was leaning into the Gothic atmosphere they'd become famous for, but here they're mixing it with the high-energy choreography of the Shaw Brothers. If you're into old-school horror or classic martial arts cinema, this is a rare chance to see them collide on the big screen.
