A romantic concert featuring the Oregon Symphony conducted by Jun Märkl with violinist Karen Gomyo as soloist, with works by Berlioz, Dvořák, Fauré and Tchaikovsky.
The Oregon Symphony is playing Romance & Devotion at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall on Sunday, February 14, at 1 PM. It's part of the orchestra's Classical Series A, and the whole program is built around lovers and romance, which makes it a pretty natural fit for Valentine's Day.
Principal Guest Conductor Jun Märkl is leading the orchestra, and violinist Karen Gomyo is the soloist for the night. The program opens with Berlioz's overture to Béatrice et Bénédict, based on Shakespeare's comedy about a couple who spend their time out-witting each other. That's paired with Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet Overture-Fantasy, which does the opposite—the high drama of the world's most famous star-crossed lovers. Between those two, you've got Fauré's suite from Pelléas et Mélisande and Dvořák's Violin Concerto in A minor, Op. 53, the piece Gomyo takes the lead on.
