A documentary screening of 'Running Wild: Return to the River' in 3D, followed by a discussion with experts on protecting salmon habitats from strip nickel mining.
OMSI is bringing Running Wild: Return to the River to the Empirical Theater on Tuesday, October 13, as part of its Reel Science series. The night starts with a 3D screening of the film, which runs 40 minutes and is rated G. It's narrated by Academy Award nominee Liam Neeson and follows the epic return of wild Pacific salmon to the streams where they began, weaving in the grizzlies, wolves, orcas and eagles that rely on their ocean bounty.
After the film, the theater turns into a discussion. The panel includes Zach Collier, a whitewater guide with Northwest Rafting Company; Stacey Detwiler, Oregon Policy Director for Wild Salmon Strongholds; and David Moryc, River Protection Program Director at American Rivers. Ramona DeNies, a senior writer and producer for Wild Salmon Strongholds, moderates. The conversation focuses on the campaign to protect salmon strongholds in southern Oregon and northern California from strip nickel mining.
Reel Science is OMSI's series that brings the science of movies and documentaries to life on the big screen, combining the format of Science Pub with a movie night and bringing in experts to amplify the viewing experience. The Empirical Theater is powered by Dolby Atmos, and the venue also offers 'Reel Eats' pairings of bites with moments from a film. For those who need them, closed captions, audio description and volume amplification are available through CaptiView and Fidelio RX units.
