A bold, comedic stage adaptation of Jane Austen's classic novel, presented as a madcap farce with double casting and modern musical elements.
Pride & Prejudice is playing at Portland Center Stage through October 25, as part of the company's 2026-27 season. It's Kate Hamill's adaptation of Jane Austen's 1813 novel, directed by Marissa Wolf. Hamill is known for putting feminist spins on period literature—she also wrote the Sense & Sensibility that PCS staged in 2019 and Ms. Holmes & Ms. Watson - Apt. 2B—and this version leans more toward madcap farce than a polite comedy of manners. Elizabeth starts out actively rejecting marriage, and the production mixes period costumes with modern piano tunes that feel a bit like Bridgerton. Double casting also plays a role, with actors taking on multiple, often very different roles throughout the show.
Kushi Beauchamp plays Lizzy, with Charles Grant as Mr. Darcy. Dana Green is Mrs. Bennet, Michael O'Connell doubles as Mr. Bennet and Mr. Collins, and Ashlee Radney plays Jane. Treasure Lunan takes on Mr. Bingley, Janice Munk is Miss Bingley, Setareki is Mr. Darcy, and Nicole Marie Green is Lydia. The production features choreography by Darrell Grand Moultrie, scenic design by Alex Meyer with original scenic design by Kimie Nishikawa, and lighting by Joel Ferraro.
Artistic director Marissa Wolf says the 1995 BBC miniseries, starring Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth, was what made her truly appreciate the story. The show opens the 2026-27 season, which is the company's 20th at The Armory and runs under the theme 'Then. Now. Next.'
