The Philip Glass Ensemble and the Oregon Symphony, led by conductor Michael Riesman, bring Philip Glass's score from the film Powaqqatsi to the stage.
The Philip Glass Ensemble brings Powaqqatsi to the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall on Wednesday, November 4, performing the score live alongside the Oregon Symphony. Conductor Michael Riesman leads the ensemble, and the two groups share the stage to provide the music in real time while the film plays.
Powaqqatsi is a cinematic experience about the impact of modernization and industrialization on traditional ways of living, told through footage of communities across the globe. The title comes from the Hopi words powaq (sorcerer) and qatsi (life). Its narrative is carried by a Philip Glass score that blends native, classical, and electronic instruments, and it can be watched on its own or as the second film in the Qatsi series, which opened with Koyaanisqatsi. This live staging hands that score over to the Ensemble and the Symphony, with Riesman at the front.
