Jazz concert featuring Paulus Schafer and Jimmy Grant at 1126 SW Park Ave in Portland.
Paulus Schafer plays 1126 SW Park Ave on Monday, October 12, with Jimmy Grant joining him on guitar. It's a two-guitar bill, and Grant brings a specific kind of pedigree to the night. He's a Northern California native from Modesto who grew up touring with his father's bluegrass band, and he discovered Django Reinhardt along the way. That influence runs through everything he does: he plays a blend of world musics and his own compositions, and he studied under guitarists Jim Nichols and Howard Alden. His range of influences stretches from Bach and Kovacs Andor to Roby Lakatos and Angelo Debarre, so the set should pull from a few different traditions.
Grant has played alongside David Grisman, Tim Kliphuis, Gonzalo Bergara, Ludovic Beier, Velvet Caravan, Rhythm Future Quartet, and the Hot Club of San Francisco. He's also performed at the Savannah Music Festival, the Los Angeles Django Reinhardt Festival, Nor-Cal Jazz Fest, Djangofest Northwest, and The New York Hot Jazz Festival. He's recorded two albums under his own name, and his original song 'Insomnia' was a finalist in the jazz category of the John Lennon songwriting competition.
