Screening of the 2025 film 'Outdoor School' followed by a discussion with director Ime N. Etuk, actress Cycerli Ash, author Vin Shambry and guest moderator Ken Bodie.
Tomorrow Theater is screening Outdoor School on Wednesday, October 14, from 7 PM to 9 PM. The film is directed by Portland filmmaker Ime N. Etuk and is inspired by the true life story of author Vin Shambry. It follows Melvin Shambry, a charismatic 12-year-old whose childhood is marked by instability and limited opportunity, until an outdoor education program shifts his sense of what is possible. Set against the nostalgia of 1990s Portland and the beauty of the Oregon woods, the movie asks how access, mentorship and community can alter a young person's life.
Etuk, a first-generation Nigerian raised in Portland, also leads Lion Speaks, a nonprofit that mentors historically excluded Black and BIPOC creatives. The film's inspiration, Vin Shambry, is an acclaimed writer and actor who performed on Broadway in Rent and Miss Saigon and won a 2011 Portland Drammy. The cast includes Cycerli Ash, who has appeared in Cellar Door and Pretty Little Liars and holds an MFA in Acting.
The screening is 135 minutes long and is followed by a discussion with director Ime N. Etuk, actress Cycerli Ash, author Vin Shambry and guest moderator Ken Bodie, a veteran KOIN news anchor and 2026 regional Emmy winner. A portion of each ticket benefits Bradley Angle and P:ear Mentoring.
