Concert by Ottmar Liebert and Luna Negra at The Alberta Rose Theatre, featuring instrumental acoustic guitar music.
Ottmar Liebert and Luna Negra play The Alberta Rose Theatre on Monday, October 12. Liebert is the name you likely know, and Luna Negra is the band he's fronted since 1989.
Liebert's story starts in Cologne, Germany, where he picked up the guitar at 11. He spent some time playing rock in Boston before settling in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and it was that landscape that shaped his soundβa mix of Spanish, Mexican, and world elements, with melancholic melodies balanced by upbeat rhythms. His debut album began as a self-produced release called Marita: Shadows and Storms, which the local Native American artist Frank Howell distributed through his art galleries. Higher Octave Music later released a remastered version, Nouveau Flamenco, recorded for less than $3,000 in a shack beside a gravel pit. It became an international sensation and the best-selling instrumental acoustic guitar album of all time, eventually going double-platinum. Since 1990, he's released more than 35 albums.
As for the band, Liebert describes Luna Negra as a "rubber band" whose members change with the seasons, with only he and bassist Jon Gagan as constants. That makes the guitar the one thing you can count on from night to night.
