The Oregon Symphony presents Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto with soloist Stella Chen, alongside Scriabin's The Poem of Ecstasy and Mussorgsky pieces.
The Oregon Symphony is bringing Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto to the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall on Saturday, June 12, 2027, at 2 PM. The concerto is in D major, Op. 35, and the soloist is Stella Chen, who won the Queen Elisabeth Competition in 2019. It's a matinee, so you'll be out by mid-afternoon with the whole day still ahead of you.
The rest of the program pulls from two other composers. There's Scriabin's The Poem of Ecstasy, which is described as one of the most exhilarating, rapturous and color-saturated journeys in all orchestral music. Then come two pieces by Mussorgsky: the sunrise over the Moscow River from the opera Khovanshchina, and Night on Bald Mountain, the one Disney made famous in Fantasia. Between the Tchaikovsky concerto, the Scriabin, and the Mussorgsky, the afternoon covers a fair amount of ground.
