A full screening with orchestra of the silent film Metropolis by Fritz Lang, part of the Film Concerts series, with music by Schoenberg, Berg and Grieg.
The Oregon Symphony brings Fritz Lang's 1927 silent film Metropolis to the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall on Saturday, April 3, 2027. It's a full screening with a live orchestra, part of the symphony's Film Concerts series.
For a long time, Metropolis has been seen as a film that cries out for a score that can match its staggering images and powerful emotional themes. This version was created to mark the film's centenary and works like a virtual music video for film and orchestra, pairing the original footage with music by Arnold Schoenberg, Alban Berg, and Edvard Grieg. The Washington Post noted that when set to great music, the film "emerges as an even richer work."
The evening is staged with the Portland Art Museum as a celebration of German Expressionism in art and film. The venue, the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, was once a grand movie palace and is now regarded as Portland's most elegant stage, so it's a fitting place for a silent film to be brought back to life with a full orchestra.
