The Oregon Symphony performs a tribute to Paul Simon's songwriting with the Oregon Symphony and vocalists Paul Loren, Emily Drennan and Daniel Berryman.
The Oregon Symphony is bringing a tribute to Paul Simon to the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall on February 6 and 7, 2027. The program, titled Legends: The Paul Simon Songbook, is part of the symphony's Pops Series, and it's eligible for the Choose Your Own Series here in Portland.
It's a vocal-led show. Principal Pops Conductor Jeff Tyzik leads the orchestra, with vocals from Daniel Berryman, Emily Drennan and Paul Loren. The set pairs Simon & Garfunkel classics like "The Boxer" and "Bridge Over Troubled Water" with Simon's solo hits, including "Graceland." It's a broad sweep of his work, pulling from both the folk-harmony years and the global sounds of his later records.
The symphony describes Simon as popular music's premier poet of the human condition, whose writing speaks to the struggle, faith and beauty found in everyday existence. That's the angle they're leaning into here: treating his songs as a songbook to be worked through rather than just a greatest hits package. And just to be clear, Paul Simon himself does not perform live.
