Grammy-winning producer and jazz improviser Kiefer plays the Star Theater with Shibo in an all-ages show.
Kiefer plays the Star Theater on Saturday, October 17, with Shibo joining him. It's a night presented by Soul'd Out, and it's open to all ages.
If you're not familiar with Kiefer, he's a pianist and producer from Los Angeles who works right in the gap between jazz improvisation and hip-hop beat-making. He calls his style "Over The Breaks," a sound that reached new heights on Memory Bomb, his solo debut for Blue Note Records. He's been signed to both Stones Throw and Blue Note, and he's a Grammy Award-winning producer for his work on Anderson .Paak's Malibu. Along the way, he's collaborated with Dr. Dre, Kaytranada, De La Soul, Pete Rock, Terrace Martin, Kenny Beats, Walter Smith III, and Nate Smith.
His influences run from Herbie Hancock to LA beat-makers like Madlib, and you can hear that pull in the music: lush harmony paired with minimalist, hypnotic grooves. He's often described as one of Los Angeles's best-kept musical secrets, a player who plays with his soul rather than his fingers.
