Singer-songwriter Joy Oladokun performs her The Heavy Things Tour at the Aladdin Theater in Portland, with support from Madeline Edwards.
Joy Oladokun plays the Aladdin Theater on Tuesday, October 27, as part of The Heavy Things Tour. She's bringing Madeline Edwards along to open the night.
Oladokun is a Nashville singer-songwriter, a queer Black woman and daughter of Nigerian immigrants. Rolling Stone once called her "Nashville's most low-key musical revolutionary," and she's known for a vulnerable voice that carries through her pop-folk roots. Since her breakthrough in 2020, she's put out two albums: in defense of my own happiness in 2021 and Proof of Life in 2023. Her next record, Observations From a Crowded Room, is coming soon—around 15 tracks she wrote and produced on her own, blending that folk foundation with electronic and psychedelic elements.
She's played some high-profile stages along the way. She performed at the White House signing of the Respect for Marriage Act and has appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, The Tonight Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Austin City Limits, and NPR Music's Tiny Desk (Home) Concert. Her song "i see america" was a finalist for the Recording Academy's Special Merit Award for Best Song for Social Change, and she's collaborated with Chris Stapleton, Brandi Carlile, Maren Morris, Jason Isbell, and Noah Kahan.
