Exhibition curated by the Harriet Tubman Center for Expanded Curatorial Practice, where fourth and fifth-grade students act as researchers and curators.
The Harriet Tubman Center Museum is on view at the Portland Art Museum through January 3, 2027. It's a project of the KSMoCA, which artist, educator, and curator Lisa Jarrett co-founded with Harrell Fletcher. The project started back in 2018 at Harriet Tubman Middle School and now operates out of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School.
What makes this one different from your usual museum show is who's behind it. Fourth and fifth grade curators at MLK Elementary worked as researchers, writers, planners, and curators, collaborating with artists, visiting curators, and mentors from Portland State University's College of the Arts. The exhibition was shaped by conversations with curators Dr. Lowery Stokes Sims and Dr. Leslie King Hammond, and it draws from the Portland Art Museum's own collection.
It's also part of the museum's transformed campus, which opened last November with the $116 million Mark Rothko Pavilion and more than 30 exhibitions. The Black Art and Experiences Gallery opened as part of that grand opening and has since become a site for ceremonies, performances, and community connection.
