Internationally celebrated jazz performer Gina Saputo performs with the Chris Brown Trio at The 1905.
Gina Saputo plays The 1905 on Saturday, November 14, backed by the Chris Brown Trio. It's a jazz night with a singer who's spent more than two decades working in the Los Angeles scene before making the move here to Portland. If you've come across her name before, it's probably from the company she's kept: she's toured with Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, and Jack Sheldon, and has played venues like Club Nokia at LA Live and festivals like the Savannah Jazz Festival and the Skywards Dubai International Jazz Festival.
She didn't just land in the professional world by accident. Saputo studied jazz at the University of Southern California on a scholarship and at the Thelonious Monk Institute, which is now the Herbie Hancock Institute. These days she co-directs the Applied Music program at Santa Monica College, so she's as much about teaching the music as she is about performing it.
Her own discography gives you a good sense of where she sits. Dueto came out on Swingfest Records in 2019 and hit #4 on the iTunes Jazz Charts, and she followed that with the EP Women Talk in December 2023. She also collaborated with Jeff Goldblum on an album that put her in the same credits as Miley Cyrus, Fiona Apple, Inara George, and Gregory Porter. After 23 years in Los Angeles, she recently relocated to Portland with her husband, jazz organist Joe Bagg.
