A screening of F.W. Murnau's 1926 silent film Faust on 16mm, accompanied by a live score from the band Accendino, as part of the Horror October festival.
Clinton Street Theater is screening F.W. Murnau's Faust (1926) on 16mm with a live score by Accendino on Sunday, October 11, from 7 to 9 PM. The film is a cornerstone of German Expressionist cinema, loosely adapted from Goethe's 1790 tragedy. It follows a gentle, bearded alchemist whose plague-ravaged village is visited by Mephisto, who offers him youth and passion in exchange for his soul. Camilla Horn plays Gretchen, a spectral, shivering figure. The film's aesthetic is one of painterly chiaroscuro, winged angels, cowering demons, and slivers of light and gold.
Accendino, a Seattle-based soundscaping duo, will provide the score live in the room. They describe their approach as "garage jazz," a blend of prog rock, doom, funk, and ambient elements. Because the music is performed live rather than recorded, the sound will be tailored to the screening as it happens.
The night is part of Horror October, Clinton Street Theater's annual festival of cult classics, international horror, midnight movies, and Halloween-themed oddities. Faust fits right in with the festival's focus on the eerie and the atmospheric, and the 16mm projection keeps it in the spirit of the era.
