Trumpeter Farnell Newton brings his blend of jazz, soul and R&B to The 1905, presenting a tribute to the legendary Donald Byrd.
Farnell Newton plays The 1905 on Wednesday, July 15, with two shows that evening, one at 6:30 PM and another at 8:30 PM. The set is a tribute to the legendary trumpeter and bandleader Donald Byrd, with selections drawn from his iconic Mizell Brothers era.
Newton is a trumpeter and one of the most versatile musicians and educators in the Northwest, at home in straight-ahead jazz, smooth jazz, Latin, soul, hip hop and funk. He's worked alongside Jill Scott, Bootsy Collins, Liv Warfield and saxophonist Mike Phillips, and is known for bringing his blend of jazz, soul, R&B and funk to intimate listening rooms. For this bill, he's putting that range toward Byrd's music, specifically the sound of the Mizell Brothers years.
He's not playing alone. The band includes Tyrone Hendrix on drums, JP Downer on bass, Michael Elson on keys and Kyle Molitor on trombone. With five horns and a full rhythm section, it's a substantial group for a tribute like this.
