Concert by the Indigenous punk band Dead Pioneers at The Hallowed Halls in Portland.
Dead Pioneers play The Hallowed Halls in Portland on Sunday, December 13, at 7 PM. It's a project led by vocalist Gregg Deal, a nationally known Indigenous artist of the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe, and it grew out of a performance piece he titled The Punk Pan-Indian Romantic Comedy.
The band came together during the Covid lockdown, with guitarist Josh Rivera and drummer Shane Zweygardt. The sound clicked when Deal met bassist Lee Tesche, and their first single, "Bad Indian," led to a self-titled debut LP recorded at The Blasting Room in Fort Collins, Colorado. That record is where you'll find the songs they're bringing to the stage.
They describe their work as rooted in a punk aesthetic from a First Peoples perspective, and they don't shy away from hard political and social issues. They stand in solidarity with Indigenous, Black, Brown, Asian, Gay, Trans and workers' rights, and the set blends original songs with spoken word and punk riffs. It's a mix of music and spoken word that lets the political side of the project take as much space as the songs do.
