An orchestral tribute to the music of Joni Mitchell, Carole King and Carly Simon, performed by the Oregon Symphony with MasterVoices.
The Oregon Symphony is bringing Clouds in My Coffee to the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall on Saturday, May 8, and Sunday, May 9, 2027. It's a tribute to Joni Mitchell, Carole King and Carly Simon, three songwriters whose work defined the sound of the 1970s. The program turns their catalogs into orchestral arrangements, with songs like "Both Sides Now," "You've Got a Friend" and "You're So Vain" among them. The original artists aren't performing live; the songs are handled by the symphony and a trio of vocalists: Micaela Diamond, Morgan James and Bryonha Marie.
Leading the orchestra is Ted Sperling, a Manhattan-born musical director, conductor and orchestrator who won a Tony Award for his work on The Light in the Piazza. He also leads MasterVoices and has worked with artists like Audra McDonald. The orchestra itself is the Grammy-nominated Oregon Symphony, founded in 1896 and described as the oldest orchestra on the West Coast. They're known for programming that blends classical music with jazz, indie and hip hop, and for collaborating with acts as varied as The Decemberists, esperanza spalding and Rick Ross.
