Live fingerstyle guitar show by Canadian guitarist Calum Graham at Rose City Guitar Company on Burnside.
Calum Graham plays Rose City Guitar Company on Saturday, October 17, starting at 7 PM. He's a fingerstyle guitarist from Victoria, Canada, and this is a solo show, so it's just him and the guitar.
If you're not familiar with the fingerstyle tradition he works in, it's a specific way of playing where the thumb and fingers handle bass, melody, and percussion all at once, making one guitar sound like a few instruments playing together. He's placing himself in the same lineage as Andy McKee, Jon Gomm, Don Ross, Sungha Jung, Antoine Dufour, and Michael Hedges—names that, if you've spent any time with modern acoustic guitar, probably ring a bell. It's music that tends to be as much about the physical act of playing as it is about the songs themselves.
Coming from Victoria, Graham is visiting from across the border, so this is one of his few stops in the area. The set is built around that fingerstyle approach, with the guitar doing the heavy lifting on its own. If you've followed those other names, you've got a good sense of the territory he's covering.
