An artist-led creative workshop where 10-13 year-olds create personal statement portraits using acrylics, markers and magazine cut-outs, part of The Box's Summer of Expression.
The Box is hosting This is Me: Creative Portrait Making on Saturday 20 September, a workshop for 10-13 year-olds that turns a magazine-style template into a personal statement of identity. The session is delivered by Big Sis CIC, a Plymouth-based charity that supports the well-being of girls and non-binary individuals during pre-puberty and puberty through arts-based mental health and well-being programmes. It's led by Azza Gasim, a UK-based interdisciplinary artist whose practice has been shaped by her experience working across Dubai and the UK.
Inside the session, participants start with a magazine-style template and layer their favourite photo on top of it. From there, they work over the image with acrylic paints, markers and magazine cut-outs, drawing inspiration from the exhibitions hanging around them at The Box. The finished canvas goes home with them. It's a hands-on way of thinking about identity and how you want to present yourself, and because it's set within the gallery, there's plenty of other art to look at for ideas while you work.

The workshop runs from 13:00 to 14:45 on Saturday 20 September at The Box, Tavistock Place, Plymouth, PL4 8AX. Tickets are £9 standard.
