A hands-on cake decorating workshop where you transform a sponge into an edible work of art with coloured icing, inspired by the abstract art of Gillian Ayres.
The Box is running a cake decorating class on Wednesday 9 September, led by Rebecca from Fancy Pants Cakes & Bakes. It's a relaxed, hands-on session for complete beginners and keen bakers alike, and you take your finished cake home with you. All the materials are provided, including a 4 x 4 inch cake to start with.
Over the course of the class, you'll learn how to turn a simple sponge into a vibrant, edible work of art using brightly coloured icing and professional decorating techniques. The focus is on colour and texture, so it's as much about playing with the icing as it is about the final result. If you've never touched a piping bag before, that's fine — it's designed to be accessible, and you'll walk away with a cake you actually made yourself.
The class is part of Summer of Expression, a season at The Box that takes creativity beyond the canvas with exhibition tours, artist-led events and hands-on family activities, and encourages visitors of all ages to explore their own creativity. The workshops draw inspiration from the abstract art of Gillian Ayres, one of Britain's most influential abstract painters, who lived in Morwenstow from 1987 until her death in 2018. The season centres on two major shows: Echoes of Us, drawing on the Government Art Collection and co-curated with young people from Plymouth, and Gillian Ayres: A Life in Colour, a retrospective of the artist's work.

There are two dates to choose from — 9 and 23 September — so if the first one doesn't suit, you've got a second chance. Tickets are £50, and since everything is provided, you just need to turn up and get stuck in.
