Dartmoor Zoo is running Rangers, a three-day wildlife workshop for children aged 6 to 12, this August. It's an interactive programme led by qualified teachers and teaching assistants, so it's as much about learning as it is about having a go. The sessions run from 3 to 5 August and 17 to 19 August, with the 10 to 12 August session already sold out.
The animal encounters are the main draw. The kids get to feed small mammals and spend time learning about the different species kept at the zoo, rather than just watching from behind a fence. It's a hands-on way to get them thinking about wildlife, and because it's run by teachers, the educational side is built right in. The whole thing is designed to be fully interactive, so the children are doing things and asking questions throughout the three days.
Beyond the animal work, there's more to it than just the sessions. Zoo admission is included, and lunch is provided in the Jaguar Restaurant, so it's a full day out. At the end, every child gets a certificate of achievement to take home. For parents, it works as a supervised alternative to childcare during the summer holidays, keeping the kids occupied and looked after in a safe, zoo-based environment while you're sorted for the day.
