A quiet family craft session in The Box Learning Room, with activities inspired by the 42 Little Lights lighthouses and Gillian Ayres.
The Box is running Quiet and Calm Family Crafts in the Learning Room this August, with sessions on the 7th and 27th. It's a dedicated space for families to make things together without the usual museum bustle around them.
The two dates each have their own project, both tied to what's on in the galleries. On 7 August, the craft is inspired by 42 Little Lights, the collection of lighthouses displayed around the building over the summer. On 27 August, it's gelli plate printing inspired by Gillian Ayres, a pioneering abstract artist whose large paintings are the focus of the major exhibition Gillian Ayres: A Life in Colour.
There's a specific reason these sessions exist: they were set up at the request of families who found the regular family craft activities at The Box too busy. The Quiet and Calm version runs in the Learning Room, away from the main crowds. The early session opens the doors to a maximum of 18 people before the museum opens to the public at 10.30am, so it's a good shout if you're taking kids who do better in a smaller, quieter room.

If the early slot doesn't work for you, the same free activity runs in the Learning Room from 10.30am to 12.30pm and 1.30pm to 3.30pm on the same day. Both sessions are free, with donations welcome.
