A guided comedy tour led by Suzy Bennett that walks through the city centre, The Hoe and the Barbican, exploring the locations that inspired the artist Beryl Cook.
The Beryl Cook Comedy Tour is back on the streets of Plymouth on Saturday 29 August, with the walk starting at The Box at 11:30. It's led by Suzy Bennett, a 'Funny Women' award winner and a Plymouth Comedy Tours guide, and it takes you through the city that inspired Beryl Cook's work. Cook is one of Plymouth's most beloved artists, known for her joyful, larger-than-life characters and those playful pub scenes of ordinary people just enjoying themselves. The tour follows that spirit, walking through the city centre, across The Hoe, and down to the Barbican, stopping to meet the colourful characters she immortalised in sculptures around the city and the lively locals she would have loved to sketch. It's a proper Janner's-eye view of the place.
Bennett's tour is part of a wider celebration of Cook across the city, so it fits into something bigger. There's Beryl Cook: Pride and Joy, a major free exhibition at The Box with more than 80 original works, and a city-wide trail of life-size statues. If you're already heading in for the exhibition, the walk is a natural companion to it. Comedians and critics have been quick to praise it: Russell Kane called it 'a charm bomb', Davina McCall said it's 'very, very funny', and the Metro described Suzy as 'delightful company'. Practical details: the tour starts at The Box, Tavistock Place, Plymouth, PL4 8AX, and finishes at The Dolphin pub on the Barbican. Tickets are £25.00. If you can't make the 29 August date, there's another run on Saturday 26 September at 11:30.
