Immersive workshop with Plymouth Laureate of Words R.C. Thomas to explore mythologies and write a tale around Plymouth Sound, part of the Read Write Yap festival.
R.C. Thomas is leading a writing workshop at Royal William Yard Marina on Friday 4 September, from 4pm to 6.30pm. Thomas is Plymouth's Laureate of Words, and the session is called A New Mythology for Plymouth Sound.
It's not a sit-down class. The afternoon is split into three parts: an onshore session at the Marina, a boat trip out onto the Sound, and a final onshore session. Along the way, you'll be drawing on mythologies, folktales and legends inspired by the sea and the stories that came before. The group will work together to build a tale around Plymouth Sound, and that story will later be told to the public at a live event in 2027.
The workshop is part of Read Write Yap, Royal William Yard's first literary festival—a month-long celebration of reading, writing and spoken word rooted in the local community. It was launched during the National Year of Reading, a Department for Education initiative, and runs throughout September, culminating on 27 September with the Read Write Yap Market on The Green. This is one of the sessions that makes up the festival's programme.

It's open to all abilities, and families are welcome, with ages 8 and up suggested. Tickets are £5, and the session runs from 4pm to 6.30pm on Friday 4 September at Royal William Yard Marina.
