If you are in Plymouth and the craving is steak, Miller & Carter is the obvious place to land. It has been a fixture on the waterfront for years, and it is not without reason: the Craft Guild of Chefs handed it 'The Masters of Steak' title, and the beef is the real star here. The kitchen works with hand-cut British and Irish beef, with the Irish beef aged for 30 days, which is where that reputation comes from.

The location does a lot of the heavy lifting. It sits on Sutton Wharf in Sutton Harbour, looking out over The Barbican, Hoe Park and the National Marine Aquarium, so it works as well for a business lunch as it does for a romantic dinner or a family meal. The interior is elegant and comfortable, and there is a bar and a terrace for when the weather plays ball. It is open all year round, Monday to Saturday from 12:00 to 23:00 and Sundays from 12:00 to 22:30, so you are not fighting a narrow window to get a table.
While steak is the headline, the menu is broader than that. It is modern British cooking with a focus on fresh, local produce, so you will find seasonal British dishes, seafood and classic pub favourites alongside the beef, often with a modern twist. There is also a vegetarian option, and the restaurant sources from local suppliers, which is worth knowing if you care where your food comes from. On the hygiene front, it holds a Food Hygiene Rating of 5, last updated on 12 June 2026.

It is worth taking a moment to appreciate where you are sitting, too. The Barbican is the old port of Plymouth, the place Sir Francis Drake set sail from and where the Pilgrim Fathers left on the Mayflower in 1620, and it still holds the highest concentration of cobbled streets in Britain. With the National Marine Aquarium, the Plymouth Gin Distillery and the Barbican Theatre all within easy reach, it is an easy place to build an evening around.
