Plymouth's Ocean City Running Festival Highlights

Plymouth's waterfront recently hosted one of the biggest sporting gatherings of the year. The Britain's Ocean City Running Festival took place on Sunday 17 May 2026, bringing thousands of runners and spectators to the streets. Organised by Run Plymouth, the event started at 9:15am from the Plymouth Hoe Promenade, with entry prices starting from £16.00. The festival featured several distinct categories, including the Plymouth Half Marathon, the Plymouth 10k, the Acronyms Tamar 10k, and the Primary School’s Challenge, drawing over 10,000 participants and 30,000 spectators to the city.

The route highlights the historic landscape of Plymouth Hoe, a public open space situated above limestone cliffs that offers views of Plymouth Sound, Drake's Island, and Mount Edgcumbe. Along the course, runners and supporters passed several of the city's key landmarks. Smeaton's Tower, the iconic 72-foot-high lighthouse rebuilt on the Hoe in 1882, is currently open for visitors daily from 10:00 to 17:00 until 1 November 2026, with admission priced at £8 for adults at the door or £7 online. Nearby, the 17th-century Royal Citadel fortress remains an active military base for the 29th Commando Regiment, Royal Artillery, with guided tours available on Saturdays through September 2026 for £12.50, requiring online booking at least 24 hours in advance.

Further along the waterfront, Tinside Lido, the Grade II listed Art Deco seawater pool built in 1935, is open for its summer season until 13 September 2026. The pool operates from 12:00 to 18:00 during school terms and opens at 10:00 on weekends and holidays, with entry costing £10.00 for the general public and £6.30 for Plymouth residents. The surrounding Hoe area is also designated as a County Wildlife Site, supporting limestone grasslands and species like wild clary, while bordering the marine habitats of Plymouth Sound.
